If you aren't satisfied with your old kitchen countertop, there is an affordable an easy to do way to update your kitchen or even bathroom countertop and make it look like new.

Paint can be used to give counters a cool look - like they are made from granite. The process of doing this is not expensive and costs only a small part of the real granite price.

With this manual you will be able to have counters beautiful again and paint your laminate countertops to look like granite.

For the process you must first decide which granite you want to imitate. Then get a real sample somewhere, or print a sample from the internet. You will also need some primer for the laminate, which is usually available at your local hardware stores.(Cabinet Rescue primer works very well)

You will also need two foam rollers, roller pan, foam brush. You will also need the paint in the colors of granite that you are trying to imitate. You can use many colors to make it look how you like it, or to perfectly imitate the granite. You also need a sea sponge, which you will cut in couple of pieces.

They should be about two inches long. Some plastic coated paper plates will also be needed. Some water based polyurethane will also be needed. Polyurethane is used to achieve high gloss. When you start, you must first clean the counters and eliminate any dirt and grease. After that take the roller pan and put some primer for the laminate on it. Make smooth and even movements with the roller pan and use the foam brush for places that you can’t reach with the roller pan. Let it dry for some time. After at least two hours repeat the procedure and let it dry for at least one day.

Take the paper plates and put about 2 spoons of each acrylic paint on the plates. Wet sponge a piece of the sponge in the water and then squeeze it until it is mostly dry.Do the same for the other pieces. Dip the sponge in one of the paints and softly touch the counter.

You can repeat this for some times and then dip the sponge again. The movement should be from left part of the countertop to the right. Put designs far apart. After about a minute, the paint will dry. Repeat the same procedure with a new sponge and another color. Repeat this with all the colors and continue to pounce them.

You can hardly do anything wrong in this phase, just make sure you cover the whole white primer. Try to imitate the stone sample as much as possible and you will get a laminate countertop that looks like granite.

After you have completely covered the counter with paint and you have a granite design you like, wait until it is dry. Then use the second foam roller to put on a couple of layers of polyurethane, which will give the counter high gloss. Make sure you let it dry for at least 1 hour between coats and now you have a Formica countertop that looks like granite. Treat it gently for two weeks so that the color dries up completely.
